A girl of four is being treated for stress and depression after she was refused a place at her local school.

Mollie Murphy became so distraught at being separated from her best friends that she had to see a doctor.

Last night, the youngster's mother spoke of her shock after the GP said he would consider a course of anti-depressants and counselling if Mollie's condition does not improve.

"When he said she had stress and depression at first I thought he must be joking," said 26-year-old hairdresser Victoria Anderson.

"I thought, how can a little girl suffer from that? It's an adult's problem and Mollie's only four. But he told me it does happen."

Although the number of children suffering from depression remains relatively low, experts claim the rate has dramatically increased in recent years.

According to research by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, as many as 40,000 children and adolescents were prescribed anti-depressants in 2003.

Miss Anderson said her daughter started experiencing problems in September.

Okay, lets try this again.

Dr. Szasz has often stated, "life is not fair." In fact, it is an important concept in libertarian thinking and it does dovetail well with Szasz's overall philosophy.

The manner in which individuals respond to and deal with the inequities and conflicts experienced throughout life may be a valid way to conceptualize 'mental health.'

Perhaps the little girl is experiencing a profound existential conflict in dealing with her separation from her friends and school.

Is that an effective way to conceptualize the problems of a 4 year old?

Up until recently 199x chidlren below 4 were beyond reach of psychiatrists. And there (4 and under) is quite a market for all sorts of drugs to be sold. I hope that the drug companies work very hard by now on a new product, namely psychothropic drugs for this group.

Why don't we just decide and start giving antidepressants like Zoloft, and tranquilisers like Valium to infants. Just in case. Even better idea is to introduce a special formula with both drugs added. It would solve many porblems before they arrise.

Why this tone? It is rather simple. 4 year old child does not have the mental and emotional capacity yet to have depression. How did the 'doctor' tested for this depression? Which depression rating scale (and test) the child was given to answer? Did the girl have suicidal ideaations and thoughts? Did she have problems to get up in the morning to go to work? How much was her sexual drive dimminished? What other psychopathological sings did she show?

If the doctor did what is stated in the article and prescribed the drugs and the mother allowed for administering them they both are just disturbed.
