Current Ideas: A Blog by Jeffrey A. Schaler

I've created this blog--"Current Ideas"--to share news and views related to my teaching, writing, and interests. If you want to post something, please keep it brief and to the point. Good contact is the appreciation of difference. There's no limit on opinions or information posting, but the tone of this blog is one of reasonably civilized discussion. Hate material is out, as well as unsupported extreme personal attacks.

How can the concept of the myth of mental illness be integrated into current American society?
It cannot stand on its own.

The libertarian framework necessary to accommodate the de-medicalization of behavior (with the option to see it as a medical issue if one so desires) simply does not fit into the current political, legal and social underpinnings of our society.

We may try to get opinions of experts, we may try to read authoritative books, we may even lean on the greates minds of scientists, philosophers or lawyers.

... or we may try to do a little, simple mental excercise to decide what is and what is not a disease:

In case of alcoholism: take away all alcohol. None is available, zero. Would a particular person die?

In a case of heroin addict: imagine that one day there is no heroin available, none at all, zero for ever. Would that person eventually die?
